The Simplicity Project, No. 3

Simplicity demands our deepest attention in order to be appreciated.

This is the first week of December, and thus begins my simplicity project.

Having been inspired by Kim Manley Ort, I am joining her in posting images that are simpler and more minimal than usual. It’s a way to remind myself to focus on what is really essential in an image and in the rest of life too.

If this also appeals to you, there’s a Flickr group devoted to Photographic Simplicity that you are welcome to join.

Blue woman,

will shopping bring you true joy

when what you are dying to give

is your heart?

Over the holidays, my hope is that we all make time for more simple and real connection — with our loved ones, our communities, our fellow inhabitants of this unique planet, our natural world and our true selves.

I’ll be back on December 1 to start a practice of simplicity with Kim Manley Ort.

Continuing along the thread of poetry I started, I found (was given, actually, by my poetry troubadour friend) this simple poem about simplicity by a Palestinian poet named Taha Muhammad Ali.

Every since I started making images, I have been striving for simplicity. It’s what speaks to me most directly and powerfully and what resonates most deeply. Often it is a simple impression I want to convey, a feeling, a mood, even an idea…

This week’s photo challenge is about capturing moments of wonder “when the infinite catches us by surprise” stumbling “upon it in things both big and small.”  And for me, it is often the small things that I return to over and over — a silent leaf caught in the light can be every bit as glorious as the thumping thunder of Victoria Falls.

And so

it has taken me

all of sixty years

to understand

that water is the finest drink

and bread the most delicious food

and that art is worthless

unless it plants

a measure of splendor in people’s hearts.

I recently read a wonderful post by Leo Babauta of Zen Habits that touches beautifully on the essence of simple living. It’s about stripping down to the very basics — and revelling in them.

Simplicity…

Simplicity has been a theme for us throughout the lead-up to the holidays…and now on Christmas day. Simple gifts, simple food, and simply wonderful times together…

What could be more simple than black and white photos? The huge snowfall that we’ve had recently has gifted us with simple scenes that lend themselves to black and white treatment.

A little treat for you…Simple Gifts…it’s short and wordless, but it conveys most lyrically the meaning of this season to me.
