Wild Geese
by Mary Oliver
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
Thanks Sherry for the wonderful image and Mary Oliver’s poem.
Wonderful. Black and white is just beautiful for this. Love the foreground “weed.”

Pretty image and I like the processing in black and white…. What a fun place to visit as well.

HI Sherry,
This is a perfect pairing. I love Mary Oliver, and the photo is beautiful.
Thanks Dotti. I’m glad that came through in the image. The scene was quite serene that day.
It’s really a classic, isn’t it? Mary Oliver can say things we all think, but so much more elegantly….
Thanks, Viv!
Thanks, Sarah. It’s all a matter of experimenting…;-)
Thanks, Laurie! I didn’t know if it would work, but I do like it. I keep looking for images I can convert to black and white since I love it so much. Love your lighthouse image.
Such serenity! I can feel the calm washing over me just from looking at this. Lovely.
How lovely! Simple and elegant- love the black and white! And this is a favorite poem of mine too.
Beautiful so subtle and the poem beautiful….
I would never think to do this image in B & W, but I love it. Great texture as well.
Gorgeous photo and wonderful poem too – brilliant combination! I wouldn’t have thought of doing the photo in B&W, but it works very well. Nicely done.
Thanks so much Sherry. I do appreciate your taking time to comment.
Yes, those are the goslings. I made many images of all of them but this one seemed to distill the moment best. Thanks Sandra!
That photograph IS magic!
Two graceful wild geese and maybe those are their babies in the background? I can’t quite see if they are the same species. It’s always lovely to see birds return to their place of origin when they have wintered in warmer lands.
