Just because I like it….

Just because I like it….

There’s a new store in town! And it’s called Hello Yellow. I just happened to be checking it out the other day — and buying some neat Buddha earrings — when I realized it would be perfect for the August Break yellow prompt.
Hello Yellow is one-of-a-kind little shop in Almonte, Ontario stocked to the gills with cheerfully made goods. The store carries items from artisans all over North America and owner Emily Arbour is always on the hunt for the next great handmade product.
I love how the historic main street of our town is being transformed with the colourful storefronts of new businesses owned by energetic young entrepreneurs.

And so, August begins…
I hope this will be a month full of juicy ripe summer goodness for all of us, and a time to rejuvenate in preparation for the busier seasons ahead. (Notice I don’t use the “w” word.)
Today, I’m sharing a simple image from my kitchen as a kickoff to my August break…
A veritable party — a relaxed and casual one, as are the best parties — is happening over at Susannah Conway’s blog for the August Break.
She’s been promoting the idea of a respite from blogging for the last few years. This year she’s offering a list of prompts should we feel the urge to share an image. Today’s is — you guessed it — breakfast!
If you’re curious to see how other bloggers are spending the month, just hop on over for a look…
A huge thanks to all those of you who answered my recent poll about what kind of blog posts you prefer. I’ll leave it open for a while in case you missed it…

In August I will be joining many bloggers in taking a break from regular blogging — although I’m not all that regular at the best of times. But I feel the need for a digital sabbatical so I can focus on some photo projects I’ve been hoping to do for a while.
I may pop in here as the spirit moves me to share an image or two from one of these projects…or something completely different.
In the meantime, I have a little poll for you…
I’d love it if you’d take a second or two to answer. If you prefer other types of blog posts entirely, feel free to mention this in the comments. Thanks so much for your views!

With my tongue planted firmly in my cheek, I offer you, today, my masterpiece…mini lemon meringue tarts.

You make these in mini muffin tins.

Yes, they did taste good.
I love baking and I’m always looking for recipes that are yummy, pretty but not too time-consuming. And I particularly like ones that you can’t screw up too badly. In the past, I’ve not had great success with intricate, fancy recipes!
I just finished an online course in food photography so I thought I’d use these little guys as subjects. They are a lot more cooperative than people or animals. They don’t move unless I move them…
This recipe did have three separate steps but each one was quite easy and at least two of them can be done a day ahead. When we have guests for dinner, I try to pick a dessert that can be prepared in advance.
The other thing I like about the mini tarts is that they lend themselves to portion control — you can have as many or as few as you wish while still having a taste of something sweet. Although once you taste these you may not be able to exert too much control.
I think these will become one of my go-to recipe for dinner parties. They would also be great for pot luck dinners. What about you? Do you have a special dinner party dessert recipe you find yourself returning to again and again?

Today, we’re celebrating 15 fabulous years with our first little Westie, Angus. He’s been an integral part of our family for so long now, I can barely remember what life was like before him. He’s now a senior dog, but he still has the heart and the soul of a puppy.
Angus was born in Joliette, Quebec and brought to Ottawa by a veterinarian with the rest of his litter. We had been thinking seriously about getting a dog and had been researching breeds. Once we determined that West Highland White Terriers would be perfect for us, I kept a look out in the Pets for Sale section of the paper — in those days we didn’t have the Internet to rely on for such things.
One beautiful Sunday in late summer, I spotted an ad for a litter of two male and three female Westies and said to my partner in crime: “Let’s just go and take a look…” The rest is history. We met Angus’ mother — a beautiful and calm Westie — and played with all his brothers and sisters. The vet gave us all the information we wanted, showed us Angus’ papers and told us he had been microchipped.
Angus was bright and strong and very inquisitive. He took a real liking to Bob. And the feeling was definitely mutual. I was a total goner, of course, from the moment I saw the puppies. Bob took a little more time, but before we knew it we were making an agreement. A few weeks later we went back to pick him up and I can honestly say we have loved every minute with Angus since then. Happy birthday, Angus!
